On 10/24/10 at 12:22 a.m., the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office was called to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 3 just east of Evergreen Avenue. Officers arrived on scene and found the vehicle up against a utility pole in the south ditch of Highway 3. The three occupants of the vehicle had been ejected from the vehicle and were located in the south ditch. Akron Ambulance and Fire Departments responded as well as Siouxland Paramedics and Mercy Air Care. Two of the occupants of the vehicle died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. The third occupant is being treated at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City and is in serious condition.
It was determined that the vehicle was eastbound on Highway 3 when it entered the south ditch. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest against the utility pole. The names of the occupants are being withheld pending notification of family members.
The sheriff's office was assisted by the Akron Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Le Mars Police, Akron Fire and Ambulance, Siouxland Paramedics and Mercy Air Care.
