Van Grootheest accident (PD)

On March 28, 2016 at 8:19 a.m., the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office received a call of a single vehicle accident on Highway 3 at west Le Mars.  Upon arrival, deputies located a 1984 International straight truck with a crane bed in the north ditch.  The driver, David Van Grootheest, age 46 of Hull, stated that he had been eastbound on Highway 3 approaching the railroad crossing.  He began to slow for the crossing and the brakes on the truck failed.  Rather than striking the train, Van Grootheest opted to drive the truck into the north ditch.  The vehicle has been listed as totaled.  Van Grootheest was not injured.  The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Le Mars Fire.
