On 07/05/16 the Plymouth County Communications Center received a call at approximately 0455 hrs from a motorist of debris on the roadway on Co Rd K18 near Weber Road. When a Plymouth County deputy sheriff arrived he discovered that a vehicle had struck the bridge railing and the vehicle was on its’ top in the creek.
Akron Fire and Ambulance were dispatched and upon further investigation it was determined that there was one subject still in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, a 50 year old male, was deceased and recovery efforts were successful in removing the person from the vehicle. The individual was taken Floyd Valley Hospital by the Akron Ambulance where a preliminary exam was conducted by Plymouth County Medical Examiner, Dr. Shelia Holcomb.
Investigators were able to determine that the vehicle, a 2005 Ford Van was northbound on K18 when it approached a curve in the road and the driver failed to maneuver the curve and left the roadway, striking a guardrail, which sent the vehicle airborne and striking the creek embankment on the north side.
Next of kin are being notified and the identity of the deceased will not be released until family members have been informed. The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Akron Fire and Ambulance, Hawarden Police Department and Plymouth County Secondary Roads.
