On February 19, 2011 at approximately 2345, the Le Mars Police Department was dispatched to the area of 650 4th Avenue NE for a domestic abuse situation. While officers were responding, further information was obtained that the suspect had fled in a green Ford passenger car. Deputies located a vehicle matching the description at on 4th Avenue SE near 5th Street Se. When the deputies tried to stop the suspect vehicle, the driver fled southbound on 4th Avenue and then westbound on 12th St. The driver ran several stop signs and in the area of the 600 block of 12th Street SW, the driver tried to strike a Plymouth County Sheriff's patrol car.
The deputy was able to avoid the accident as the suspect vehicle continued west on 12th Street SW. The vehicle lost control at the intersection of 12th St, Lincoln St and Business Hwy 75. The suspect vehicle struck a passing motorist and then a concrete base of a utility box.
The suspect was taken into custody and identified as Cruz Garcia, age 23, of 650 4th Ave NE, Apt A6 in Le Mars. Garcia has been charged by the sheriff's office for the following:
Felony eluding, a class D felony Felony assault on a peace officer, a class D felony and numerous traffic violations
The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Le Mars Police, Fire/Rescue and Ambulance. The investigation into the domestic and the accidents is being handled by the Le Mars Police. |
