Goebel charged with assault while displaying a weapon

On December 7, 2018 at approximately 1700 hours, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a vehicle traveling south on Hwy 60 from the Sioux County line. The passenger in this vehicle was displaying a handgun at passing motorists.  Deputies and officers from Le Mars, Merrill and Hinton began looking for the vehicle in question.

At 1709 hours, a witness called and reported the vehicle parked at Casey’s in Merrill.  As deputies were arriving at Casey’s, the vehicle left south bound on Hwy 75.  Deputies and officers conducted a felony traffic stop at MM111 south bound Hwy 75.

All 3 occupants of the vehicle were detained by deputies without incident and an investigation was conducted.  As a result, the passenger, Bailey Goebel, age 21 of Alton, Iowa, was arrested for assault while displaying a dangerous weapon. Goebel’s actions with the handgun while traveling on Hwy 60 and Hwy 75 put others in fear for their safety and well-being.

Goebel was booked into the Plymouth County Jail on the single charge and later released on bond.  Sheriff’s deputies seized a 1911 style .45 cal pistol from the vehicle. The driver and other passenger were released without any charges.
