Sauer accident (PD)

On April 21st 2020 at approximately 1012, a single vehicle accident was reported at Hwy 140 and 240th St, between Remsen and Kingsley. Upon arrival, deputies located a 2002 International semi pulling a flatbed trailer with a plastic tank affixed to it. The trailer had partially rolled onto its side when the contents of the tanks shifted or sloshed. This caused 1 tank to separate from the trailer completely and spill into the ditch. It was quickly determined that the tank had contained liquid nitrogen. Efforts were made to prevent the speed of the chemical and the Iowa DNR was notified of the spill.

The driver of the semi, Brian Sauer, age 21 of Hospers, was not injured in the accident. Damage has initially been listed at $3000 pending an inspection of the semi and trailer. Hwy 140 was closed for a short period of time as a precaution and to allow for cleanup and removal of the semi, trailer and tank.

Assisting at the scene was the Remsen Fire/ Rescue, Remsen Police and the Iowa State Patrol.
