On January 30, 2024 at approximately 3:28 PM, an Amber Alert was issued by the Iowa Department of Public Safety on behalf of the Jefferson Police Department for Bryson Duong, age 7. Bryson was attending school at the Greene County School when he was taken from a non-custodial parent, Brandon Duong, leaving the school in a black Toyota Tacoma.
At approximately 4:40 PM, the black Toyota Tacoma was spotted by the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office near Safford Ave & 230th St, south of Correctionville and Cushing areas. Woodbury County attempted a traffic stop on the Toyota Tacoma which failed to stop and a pursuit ensued with the suspect vehicle. The pursuit continued in a northerly direction entering a small portion of Cherokee County and then into Plymouth County. Pursuing officers at one point had lost contact with the suspect vehicle but where able to relocate the vehicle near Highway 3 and Sunset Ave, east of Remsen in Plymouth County. During the pursuit it was learned that the suspect Brandon Duong was possible armed with a long rifle. The vehicle continued at short distance after being relocated and crashed, at which time, the driver exited the vehicle with Bryson and proceeded on foot into a field armed with a rifle.
A perimeter was established around the section and members of the CERT Team, which consists of deputies and officers from the Plymouth Co. Sheriff’s Office, Sioux Co. Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee Co Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee Police Department and the Le Mars Police Department were able to locate Brandon and Bryson with an armored rescue vehicle. Communication was established with the suspect from negotiators which continued for several hours. The Iowa State Patrol also responded to the scene with a second armored rescue vehicle, which included members of the Iowa State Patrol and Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office tactical teams. Negotiators continued to communicate with Mr. Duong eventually taking him into custody at approximately 8:00 PM without incident or injury to either party.
Brandon Duong was transported to the Plymouth County Jail where he is currently being held on a warrant issued out of Greene County Iowa for Violating Custody Order, a class “D” felony. Investigation is continuing with additional charges expected.

Plymouth, Woodbury, Sioux, Cherokee, and O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Kingsley, Hinton, Remsen, Le Mars, Cherokee, and Marcus Police Departments, Iowa State Patrol, Division of Criminal Investigation, Department of Narcotics, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Human Services, Alcohol Tobacco Firearms (ATF), Remsen Ambulance and Le Mars Fire Rescue.
