Hurtado/Herman 10-50 PI

On December 22, 2023, the Plymouth County Communication Center received 9-1-1 calls of an injury accident involving a semi and a SUV at the intersection of Hwy 3 and Hwy 140/L-14.  Remsen Ambulance and Fire were dispatched along with sheriff’s deputies to that location. Both drivers were transported to Floyd Valley Hospital with serious but not believed to be life threatening injuries.

After an investigation, the following was determined.  A 2021 Peterbilt pulling an empty grain trailer was westbound on Hwy 3 approaching the intersection with Hwy 140/L-14.  The semi was being operated by Charles Herman, age 69 of Remsen, Iowa.  The semi was owned by Horstman Trucking of Marcus, Iowa.  Traveling northbound on Hwy 140 was a 2017 GMC Yukon Denali owned and operating by Lorena Hurtado, age 38 of rural Remsen.  At the intersection, Hurtado failed to stop at the stop sign striking the westbound semi’s driver’s side front tire with its front.  Both units then left the roadway and went into the ditch in the northwest intersection.

Both units are believed to be a total loss. The semi and trailer are estimated at $140,000 and the Yukon estimated at $27,000.  The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Remsen Fire and Ambulance, the Iowa DOT and Stockton Towing.  The accident is under further investigation.
