Kounkel arrested on multiple charges

On June 11, 2024 at approximately 6:40PM, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a victim who had been assaulted at their home in the 27,000 block of 160th St.  Deputies responded to this address and during their investigation learned that the suspect Chase Roy Kounkel, age 39 of Le Mars, Iowa, who had since left the scene, had burglarized the victims home earlier in the day and again returned to the same residence in the early evening hours and assaulted the victim causing serious injury.  At approximately 6:50PM, a Le Mars Police Officer located the suspect vehicle at the suspects home, 115 1st Ave NW, Le Mars.  Le Mars Police and sheriff deputies attempted to contact the suspect but the suspect would not answer the door. Eventually the Tri County Emergency Response Team (CERT) was activated and responded to the above address.   Negotiators with CERT were able to resolve the incident peacefully and the suspect was taken into custody at 8:50PM. The suspect was then taken to Floyd Valley Hospital to be medically evaluated.  After being released from medical care, Kounkel was transported to the Plymouth County Jail where he was charged with the following:

Willful Injury, causing serious injury  Class C Felony
Domestic assault, strangulation          Class D Felony
Burglary 3rd                                        Class D Felony
Possession of Methamphetamine 3rd   Class D Felony

Kounkel is currently being held on a $25,000 cash or surety bond.

The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Le Mars Police Department, Le Mars Fire Rescue, the Iowa State Patrol and the Tri-County CERT.
